Psychiatric Care for Individuals with PTSD

Psychiatric care for individuals with PTSD involves a comprehensive evaluation of the patient’s condition and the development of a personalised treatment plan to manage symptoms.

It is important to identify co-existing conditions such as Mood Disorders, including Depressive Disorder, and manage appropriately.

Very commonly individuals with PTSD are referred to Psychologists and Trauma Therapists for Trauma-Focussed CBT (TF-CBT) and EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitisation and Reprocessing).

A working theory, is that Trauma memories, are usually embedded in “Trauma Memory” within the Amygdalae in the mid-brain, part of the ‘Flight, Fright, Freeze” Threat system. In TF-CBT incorporating EMDR, memories are copied into “Autobiographical Memory” – within the Hippocampi – which does not enlist activation of the Threat System. Whatever the exact process, EMDR is surprisingly effective in managing symptoms of PTSD.

Treatment involves active collaboration between the patient and the Psychologist / Trauma therapist – with oversight by me a the Psychiatrist, with regular evaluations and modifications to the treatment plan as necessary.

Understanding PTSD

PTSD is a type of anxiety disorder that can develop after experiencing or witnessing a traumatic event, such as military combat, sexual or physical assault, or a natural disaster. Individuals with PTSD may experience intrusive thoughts, nightmares, or flashbacks of the traumatic event, leading to emotional distress and avoidance behaviors.

Diagnosis and Assessment

To diagnose PTSD, I will conduct a comprehensive assessment of patients referred by their GP. It is essential to obtain a formal diagnosis to determine the best course of treatment. Working with patients referred by their GP ensures that they are already on their journey to understanding their condition, and we can focus on providing them with the best possible care.

Treatment Options

PTSD is treatable, and treatment can significantly improve an individual’s quality of life. Treatment options for PTSD include medication, psychotherapy, or a combination of both.

Medication

Selective Serotonin Antidepressants (SSRIs) can be effective in managing PTSD symptoms, particularly alongside Psychological Trauma Work. I am always seeking to exclude additional diagnoses too – which may needed to be treated with medication, Depressive Disorder being very common in those with PTSD.

I hope to work closely together to determine the most suitable medication and dosage, considering treatment responsiveness  and any potential side effects.

Psychotherapy

Cognitive Behaviour Therapy (CBT), prolonged Exposure Therapy, and Eye Movement Desensitisation and Reprocessing (EMDR) are treatments that can help individuals manage their symptoms.

Lifestyle Change

Lifestyle changes can also help those with PTSD, to manage symptoms. These include regular exercise, maintaining a healthy diet, getting adequate sleep, and managing stressors.

Flexible Session Format

Face to Face and Remote Psychiatry

I undertake both in-person and remote video call sessions, to those diagnosed with PTSD. I seek to exclude other co-morbidities and conditions which can aggravate PTSD symptoms. Understandably Depressive Disorder is a very common accompanying condition.

Working together we’ll determine the best treatment options, taking into consideration factors such as your personal and work commitments, and travel issues. I frequently refer those with PTSD to specialist colleagues who specifically work with Trauma notably Trauma Therapists and Psychologists, these colleagues tend to work remotely and in person too. Initial sessions are probably best undertaken in person.
